DANCE/MOVEMENT THERAPY & REICHIAN MIND-BODY THERAPY
Dance/Movement Therapy and Reichian Character Analytic, mind/body therapy are both treatment forms premised in the unity of psyche, soma and spirit. Each works toward integration, through the continuity of physical, emotional, creative and spiritual energy. With their common conceptual base, these forms of therapy approach change from opposite ends of the treatment spectrum. In dance/movement therapy, (DMT) we work with the aesthetic elements of dance/movement in a creative process of unfoldment. In Reichian therapy, (RT) there is a more linear analytic approach to working with character as it manifests in the body, and psychological attitudes. In combination, they create a potent dual-modality that works with change efficiently and in great depth. In this experiential group, we will actively explore how these two forms complement and augment one another in our own process.
Johanna Climenko is a pioneer in dance/movement therapy (DMT) since 1968, has worked clinically with the range of populations served by DMT, and taught and consulted extensively, in and out of academic settings, in the U.S. and the Netherlands. She trained with both Marian Chace and Irmgard Bartenieff, and other first generation DMT and Laban Movement Analysis (LMA) pioneers. Since 1986 she has added Reichian Character Analytic Therapy (RT) to her private practice work, developing the combined modality of DMT and RT. Currently her focus is on the complementarity of DMT, LMA, and RT in private practice and in training and consulting other mental health professionals and students, in individual and organizational contexts for self-care, assessment, and replenishment.
Corinna Brown is a dancer, choreographer, and mind/body psychotherapist in NYC. She has been working as a dance/movement therapist for over 17 years and as Visiting Assistant Professor at Pratt Institute since 2005. She served the ADTA as Government Affairs Chairperson and the NYSADTA as President. She holds certificates in neo-Riechian psychotherapy, from her post graduate studies with Dr. Bernard Rosenblum, and a certificate in alcohol and substance abuse counseling form LIU. Her writing was recently published in Shawn Mcniff’s book on arts based research and in the Journal of Applied Arts & Health. She has been combining DMT and RT in her private practice under the supervision of Johanna Climenko since 2000.
